Great Advice from Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman

I’ve often said that when you establish the foundations of any employment relationship on a good understanding of terms and conditions, expectations and boundaries – responsibilities and authorities, the job of managing people becomes much easier.

There is more to it than that of course but the foundations, laid at the beginning sets up the relationship.  When the Fair Work Ombudsman, Nicholas Wilson gave a rare talk recently to a group of business delegates, I was delighted to notice that sound HR principles and advice were among the key messages.

Here are Nicholas Wilson’s tips for employing new staff.

“Employing new staff? Get it right from the start“

A clear understanding of expectations and entitlements between the employer and employee is vital for a successful working relationship. 

As an employer, you need to make sure that you’re paying your employees right and giving them all the conditions they are entitled to. It’s also important to manage your relationship with them to prevent problems and have a productive and cooperative workforce.

The Fair Work Ombudsman, Nicholas Wilson, has the following tips for employers hiring new staff:

  • Clearly explain your expectations 
  • Put it in writing 
  • Be sensitive and respectful 
  • Get the pay right from day one Be fair and equal 
  • Understand your obligations - provide new employees with a copy of the Fair Work Information Statement 
  • Encourage communication 
  • Be fair and equal;
